Recent intelligence updates from Western sources reveal that despite Russia's extensive air-defense network, it has been unable to prevent Ukraine from deploying long-range drones to execute deep strikes. These attacks have primarily targeted critical Russian ammunition depots, resulting in the destruction of significant quantities of weaponry essential for Moscow's military efforts.

Ukraine's successful use of drones has highlighted the effectiveness of its long-range drone programs and brought into question Russia’s capability to counter these threats. According to Britain's defense ministry, the frequency and success of these Ukrainian attacks indicate that Russia is struggling to neutralize the drones despite its comprehensive air-defense system, which includes surface-to-air missile systems, electronic warfare capabilities, anti-aircraft guns, and fighter jets.

Over the weekend, Ukraine claimed that its long-range drones managed to breach Russia’s air defenses and strike an ammunition depot in the Volgograd region. In light of this, Britain's defense ministry suggested that it is "highly likely" these attacks will compel Russia to further disperse its logistical chains to minimize the risk of additional strikes, thereby exacerbating the strain on an already overstretched system.

The Institute for the Study of War, a conflict analysis think tank, supported this view following a Ukrainian strike on a Russian ammunition depot in the Tver region in mid-September. Analysts believe that repeated, damaging strikes could force Russian military command to spread out its logistical and support systems, rendering them less susceptible to Ukrainian attacks.

The challenge of defending against long-range Ukrainian drone strikes is not a new issue for Russia. Throughout the conflict, Ukraine has managed to target key military and energy facilities inside Russian territory. These operations have largely relied on locally produced drones, as Ukraine is restricted from using Western-supplied missiles against Russian territories.

Ukrainian officials have persistently lobbied for the removal of these restrictions, arguing that it would significantly enhance their ability to undermine Russia’s military capabilities. As it stands, the continued success of Ukraine’s drone strikes presents a formidable challenge to Russia's air defense strategy.
