In a significant development, Ukraine has announced that it has gained control of 74 settlements in Russia's Kursk region, marking its largest cross-border operation since the start of the conflict. The operation has resulted in substantial territorial advancements, with Ukrainian forces gaining ground at a rate of one to three kilometers over the past 24 hours.
The surprise offensive in the western Russian region of Kursk has been a strategic move by Ukraine, which has managed to secure considerable battlefield victories following months of being on the defensive. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy revealed that the operation has resulted in the capture of a number of Russian prisoners of war who could potentially be exchanged for captured Ukrainian fighters.
Zelenskiy highlighted the growing "exchange fund" as a result of this operation. However, Kyiv has been cautious about disclosing specific details regarding their military operation, contrasting with their approach during last year's counteroffensive. The previous operation faced challenges due to well-prepared Russian defensive lines.
Despite intense battles, Ukrainian forces have continued their advancement in the Kursk region. The Ukrainian government has emphasized that their primary objective is not to acquire Russian territory but rather to protect their own people.
The operation has disrupted Russian military logistics and prevented the transfer of additional units to Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region. Ukrainian military spokesman Dmytro Lykhoviy reported a movement of Russian troops from southern areas towards other regions, including Kursk.
The Russian defence ministry has acknowledged repelling attacks at villages located approximately 26-28 kilometers from the border. Meanwhile, Russian Major General Apti Alaudinov claimed that Ukrainian forces have been halted.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to retaliate against Ukraine with a "worthy response" and accused Kyiv's "Western masters" of providing assistance to Ukrainian forces. The U.S. State Department has distanced itself from the operation, stating that it was not involved in any aspect of planning or preparation.
The Ukrainian government has emphasized that they have gained control over areas within the Kursk region that have been utilized by Russia for launching over two thousand cross-border attacks on Ukraine since June.
As the situation unfolds, there is no indication of a reduction in hostilities in eastern Ukraine. The Ukrainian military has reported a significant increase in battles with Russian forces along the Pokrovsk front since before the Kursk incursion.
The Ukrainian military has implemented restrictions on civilian movement within a 20 km zone along the northeastern border area. This decision is attributed to an escalation in hostilities and the presence of Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups. The restriction is temporary, allowing residents access to their homes with proof of registration.
The operation in Kursk has been hailed as an "asymmetrical" response to Russia's attempt to impose a positional war of attrition. Ukrainian forces aim to disrupt Russian military logistics and prevent the depletion of their own troops and resources.
The situation remains fluid as both sides continue their military operations. The developments in the Kursk region underscore the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
