In a significant turn of events, Ukrainian troops have made an unprecedented advance deep into Russian territory, marking the most substantial incursion since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The incursion, which began in the Kursk region, has entered its sixth day, with Ukrainian forces engaging Russian troops near the villages of Tolpino and Obshchy Kolodez.
Russia's defense ministry confirmed the clashes and accused Ukraine of intimidating the peaceful population of Russia. President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the nation, revealing that over 2,000 cross-border attacks have been launched from Kursk this summer alone. Zelensky emphasized that each strike on Ukrainian soil deserves a fair response.
Contrary to initial reports by Russian border guards, a senior Ukrainian official revealed that thousands of troops are engaged in the operation, representing a considerable escalation. This coordinated attack marks a significant shift in Ukrainian tactics, as it is the first major offensive by Kyiv's conventional forces on Russian territory.
The official stated that the objective of the offensive is to stretch the enemy's positions, inflict maximum losses, and destabilize the situation in Russia, exploiting their inability to protect their own borders. Reports indicate that Ukrainian troops have captured several settlements in the Kursk region, with video evidence showing Ukrainian soldiers removing the Russian flag from administrative buildings.
Conflict and fierce fighting have extended to various areas, including Sudzha, where a town of approximately 5,000 people is bearing the brunt of the violence. Notably, Ukrainian forces have reached a major gas facility involved in gas transit from Russia to the European Union via Ukraine.
The Ukrainian offensive has not gone unnoticed, as witnesses in the Sumy region observed a continuous stream of armoured personnel carriers and tanks moving towards Russia. These armored convoys bear distinguishing white triangular insignias to differentiate them from Ukrainian military hardware.
Satellite imagery analysis by BBC Verify suggests that Russia has been constructing new defensive lines near the Kursk nuclear power plant. Photos captured a few days apart reveal the presence of newly constructed trench lines within proximity of the plant, heightening concerns over potential threats to the facility.
Russia claimed that 76,000 people have been evacuated from border areas in the Kursk region, which has prompted local authorities to declare a state of emergency. Over the weekend, 15 people were injured in Kursk's regional capital when the wreckage of a downed Ukrainian missile fell on a multi-storey building.
Amidst the escalating conflict, a Ukrainian Member of Parliament hailed the operation, asserting that it brings Ukraine closer to peace. However, analysts speculate that the Kursk offensive might be an attempt to force Russia to redirect its forces away from eastern Ukraine, where Russian advances have seized a succession of villages.
The Ukrainian official contradicted this theory, highlighting that Russian operations in the east have shown no signs of relenting. Russian President Vladimir Putin referred to the offensive as a major provocation earlier this week.
As tensions continue to rise, incidents on both sides persist. Emergency services reported casualties in the Kyiv region, with a missile strike claiming the lives of a man and his four-year-old son. Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepted and destroyed the majority of attack drones launched by Russia, while also neutralizing four North Korean-manufactured missiles.
Further raising concerns, a fire broke out at a nuclear power plant in the occupied Zaporizhzhia Oblast, according to Russian officials.
The deep incursion by Ukrainian forces into Russian territory has intensified the border conflict, and the evolving situation calls for immediate attention to prevent further escalation and to bring about a peaceful resolution.
