In a tragic incident involving a sheriff's deputy, Senior Airman Roger Fortson, a member of the U.S. Air Force's Special Operations Wing stationed at Hurlburt Field, Florida, was shot and killed at his off-base residence, according to a statement released by the Air Force on Monday.

The 23-year-old airman was found at his home in Chez Elan Apartments, located approximately five miles from the air base. After sustaining critical injuries, Fortson was rushed to the hospital where he tragically succumbed to his wounds, officials confirmed.

Having joined active duty service on November 19, 2019, Fortson was assigned to the 4th Special Operations Squadron, one of the nine flying squadrons under the 1st Special Operations Wing. The 1st Special Operations Wing, based at Hurlburt Field, is home to the only two squadrons that operate the AC-130 gunship, a formidable aerial asset.

In response to the devastating loss, the Air Force's 1st Special Operations Wing issued a statement expressing their commitment to supporting Fortson's family during this difficult time. The priorities outlined by the Wing include providing casualty affairs service to the grieving family, offering support to the squadron affected by the tragedy, and ensuring necessary resources are made available to all those impacted.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting incident and involvement of the sheriff's deputy have not been divulged in the statement. An ongoing investigation is expected to shed light on the details leading up to the tragic event.

As the Air Force mourns the loss of Senior Airman Roger Fortson, friends, fellow servicemen, and the community offer their deepest condolences and support to his family and loved ones during this devastating time.
