**Trump's Return Heightens Uncertainty for Middle East Conflicts**

Former President Donald Trump is set to reclaim the U.S. presidency at a time marked by extraordinary turmoil in the Middle East. His previous strong support for Israel, coupled with a call for a swift end to the war in Gaza and a history of unpredictability, presents numerous questions about how his second term will influence the volatile region.

Upon inauguration, Trump will face ongoing fierce conflicts. The brutal war in Gaza, a response to Hamas' deadly attacks on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, shows little sign of resolution. Israel's counteroffensive has resulted in over 43,000 casualties in Gaza and heightened humanitarian distress. Concurrently, Israel is engaged in a heated offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon, while tensions with Iran and its regional proxies in Iraq and Yemen remain high.

Throughout his campaign, Trump has promised to broker peace in the region, though details on his strategy remain vague. In an April interview, he urged for an expedited end to the conflict in Gaza but did not offer specific plans. This ambiguity leaves experts uncertain about his exact intentions regarding Hamas and the broader peace efforts.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is hopeful that Trump’s return will bring renewed American support, especially given the cooler relations and delayed weapon deliveries under President Joe Biden. Trump's previous term included significant pro-Israel actions, such as recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital and supporting settlements in the West Bank. Netanyahu’s government remains ambiguous about a postwar vision for Gaza, a complexity further muddied by Trump’s lack of defined plans for the region’s future governance.

Trump's stance on Iran will be closely monitored. U.S. involvement in the Middle East, especially in supporting Israel against Iranian-linked threats, is crucial yet controversial. With the U.S. playing a significant role in Israel’s defense amid escalating conflicts with Hezbollah, the potential for increased American military engagement is a topic of concern.

As Trump prepares to take office, his influence in the Middle East remains cloaked in uncertainty. Balancing his isolationist tendencies with evangelical Christian support for Israel, his past actions suggest significant, yet unpredictable, involvement in the region’s future.
