In a fiery rally organized by the far-right Christian advocacy group Turning Point Action, former President Donald Trump launched a series of personal attacks against Democratic vice-presidential nominee Kamala Harris. Taking place in West Palm Beach, not far from his Mar-a-Lago resort and residence, the event witnessed Trump resorting to insults and threats yet again.
Trump, who had a tough week with Democratic opponents replacing Joe Biden with Harris as their top choice for president, did not hold back in expressing his disdain for his new opponent. Referring to her as "a bum" and questioning the pronunciation of her name, Trump openly displayed his disregard for Harris, who has gained support not only from Biden but also from the Obamas, the Clintons, and Democratic leaders in Congress.
During the rally, Trump made a statement that appeared to threaten American democracy, urging Christians to vote, adding, "Just this time - you won't have to do it anymore. You know what? It'll be fixed! It'll be fine. You won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians."
While Trump has found a following within the US evangelical Christian right, he faces criticism for his multiple legal issues, including civil cases related to sexual misconduct and business fraud, as well as a criminal conviction for election-related fraud. Despite ongoing criminal cases, he has managed to tilt the US Supreme Court towards conservative ideologies, pleasing his white, ultra-conservative base.
Trump's attacks on Harris extended beyond the rally, as he labeled her as "the most incompetent, unpopular, and far-left vice-president in American history." He even mispronounced her name intentionally, despite it being pronounced as KAHM-a-la.
Despite the relentless attacks, recent opinion polls have shown that Harris, who would be the first Black female nominee, the first south Asian nominee, and potentially the first female president if victorious in November, has closed the gap on Trump. Biden had been losing support in vital swing states, with Trump now facing an energetic and younger rival in Harris.
Trump's week had taken another hit earlier when his chosen running mate, JD Vance, faced criticism following awkward performances on the campaign trail. Even Jennifer Aniston lambasted Vance for disparaging remarks targeting Harris and other women who have not given birth.
In an attempt to get his campaign back on track, Trump and Vance are set to appear at a rally in Minnesota on Saturday night. The rally aims to regain momentum and combat the waning support faced by the Republican ticket.
As the election draws closer, the battle between Trump and Harris intensifies, with personal attacks and insults becoming the norm. The outcome in November will determine not only the future of the United States but also the firsts that Harris could potentially achieve if she emerges victorious.
