Cheung's new titles include assistant to the president and director of communications. Cheung previously served as the director of strategic response during Trump’s first term.
In the same batch of appointments, Trump named Sergio Gor, a close ally, as assistant to the president and the director of presidential personnel. CNN had earlier reported Gor’s likely appointment to the presidential personnel position.
"Steven Cheung and Sergio Gor have been trusted advisors since my first Presidential Campaign in 2016, and have continued to champion America First principles throughout my First Term, all the way to our Historic Victory in 2024," Trump commented. "I am thrilled to have them join my White House as we, Make America Great Again!"
The role of White House communications director is distinct from that of the White House press secretary, though some individuals have held both roles at once in the past. Trump has yet to name a press secretary for his upcoming term.
Known for his staunch defense of Trump, Cheung's work has predominantly been behind the scenes. He remains highly active on social media, where he continues to support Trump vigorously. His new role has seen significant turnover in the past, with six different individuals holding the title during Trump's first term, none of whom lasted a year. Anthony Scaramucci, notably, was in the role for only 11 days.
Prior to his involvement with Trump’s campaign, Cheung worked as a spokesman for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Trump maintains a strong connection with the UFC, often attending fights ringside, and UFC President and CEO Dana White is a well-known Trump supporter who spoke at the Republican National Convention.
During the campaign, Cheung managed communications for several noteworthy events, including an incident at Arlington National Cemetery, which led to a rebuke from the Army. Although Cheung promised to release video footage of the confrontation, it was never made public.
