In a historic turn of events, former President Donald Trump has found himself at the center of a criminal trial, becoming the first American president in history to face such charges. The trial, overseen by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, focuses on allegations that Trump falsified his business records to conceal a secret payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The charges against Trump include 34 felony counts, including the falsification of business records, a felony offense in New York state. If found guilty, Trump could potentially face more than a decade in prison. However, legal experts suggest that given the nature of the crimes and Trump's lack of a prior criminal record, the sentencing could be less severe.

The trial is expected to feature a lineup of high-profile witnesses, including Stormy Daniels, former Playboy model Karen McDougal, Trump's former personal attorney Michael Cohen, National Enquirer publisher David Pecker, and ex-campaign aide Hope Hicks. Additionally, it has been speculated that Trump himself may be compelled to take the stand.

CNN legal analyst Laura Coates explains that the charges against Trump fall under Class E crimes in New York, which are the lowest level of felonies. While each count carries a maximum sentence of four years, a decision on whether the sentences will be served concurrently or consecutively will be left to the judge. New York law imposes a 20-year sentencing cap for such offenses.

As the trial unfolds, many are left wondering what kind of Secret Service protection Trump might receive as a former president if he were to be incarcerated. There are also questions about the consequences if Trump were to be convicted of a crime but still manage to win the 2024 presidential election.

Interestingly, Trump is simultaneously facing three other criminal indictments in Florida, Washington DC, and Georgia. Additionally, he is currently appealing two recent judgments against him in New York, which required him to post significant bonds.

The hush money trial officially commenced on April 15th in Manhattan, with opening statements now scheduled for April 22nd. As the proceedings unfold, the nation watches closely to see how this landmark trial will shape the future of the former president.
