In a bid to secure crucial support in the critical battleground state of Pennsylvania, US presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have organized dueling campaign events this weekend. The former president is scheduled to hold a rally in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, while the vice president will embark on a bus tour of western Pennsylvania starting in Pittsburgh on Sunday. These campaign events take on added significance as both candidates vie for victory in the upcoming national elections.
Pennsylvania, along with Michigan and Wisconsin, has been a reliable indicator of national election outcomes since 2008. With 19 electoral college votes, Pennsylvania holds a significant weight in the race to secure the 270 votes needed to win the White House. Election forecaster Nate Silver has even highlighted Pennsylvania as the state with the highest likelihood of being the "tipping point" state for presidential victory this fall.
A recent NYT/Siena College poll indicates that Harris is currently leading Trump among probable voters in key swing states. She holds a 5-point lead in Arizona and a 2-point lead in North Carolina. However, she faces a narrow margin in Nevada and Georgia. While these states are important, both campaigns are fully aware that winning Pennsylvania is crucial to their chances of success in November.
Both Trump and Harris are targeting white, non-college-educated voters in their campaign strategies. The Harris-Walz ticket aims to consolidate support among suburban voters and increase voter turnout in urban areas with large Black populations. In contrast, Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, are hoping to peel off support from these urban areas while limiting losses in rural parts of Pennsylvania.
Trump narrowly won Pennsylvania in 2016 by a margin of 44,000 votes, less than one percentage point. However, in 2020, Democratic candidate Joe Biden emerged victorious with a margin of just over 80,000 votes, a 1.2% lead. Recent polls continue to favor Harris, with a 2% lead over Trump in Pennsylvania.
Campaign spending has also surged in Pennsylvania, receiving the largest share compared to other battleground states. Of the more than $110 million spent across seven swing states since July 22, Pennsylvania has received $42 million. Additionally, political groups have reserved $114 million worth of ad time in Pennsylvania from late August to November, more than double the amount planned for Arizona.
Both Trump and Harris are set to intensify their campaign efforts in Pennsylvania. Harris and Walz, along with their spouses, will be making stops across Allegheny and Beaver counties on Sunday. Trump will respond to Harris's economic policy proposals at an event in York, Pennsylvania on Monday. Furthermore, Pennsylvania will take center stage with the first Harris-Trump debate scheduled for September 10th in Philadelphia, hosted by ABC.
As the battle for Pennsylvania intensifies, the outcome of these campaign events and the debates will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the presidential race. The candidates understand the importance of securing Pennsylvania's support and will leave no stone unturned in their efforts to win over voters in this critical swing state.
