In a swift response to former President Joe Biden's unexpected exit from the 2024 presidential race and endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, allies of Donald Trump have launched a campaign assault against Harris. Pro-Trump super PAC, MAGA Inc., wasted no time in releasing anti-Harris advertisements in key battleground states like Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Arizona. The Republican National Committee also joined the offensive by releasing a video criticizing Harris on the Biden administration's immigration policies.
The decision by Biden to drop out of the race has thrown the presidential race into uncertain territory, leaving Trump with a new opponent and muddying the dynamics of the campaign. Initially focused on a rematch with Biden, Trump had been looking to avenge his defeat from four years ago. With polls indicating substantial leads for Trump in several swing states, last week's Republican National Convention was filled with enthusiasm and unity among Republicans, especially after a recent rally in Pennsylvania where Trump faced an assassination attempt.
At a rally in Michigan on Saturday evening, Trump wasted no time in attacking both Biden and Harris. He repeatedly called Biden "stupid" and insulted his IQ, while referring to Harris as "crazy" and giving her the nickname "laughing Kamala," claiming that her laugh revealed her unstable nature. Harris's campaign has not yet responded to these remarks.
Trump also previewed the arguments that Republicans would make against Democrats now that Biden has bowed out, referring to them as "the enemies of democracy." Trump is likely to use the current situation to deflect criticisms of imperiling democracy by suggesting that it is the Democrats who are obstructing the democratic process.
Despite Trump's apparent confidence in facing Harris, some Republicans are less bullish about the new development. Republican strategist Terry Sullivan believes that Trump can still run against both Biden and Harris's record, including issues like inflation and the border. However, Biden was seen as the weaker candidate, leading Sullivan to say that it would not be as easy of a race, but Trump would have crushed Biden in a landslide.
Shortly after Trump's announcement, he took to his own social media website, Truth Social, to criticize Biden's legacy, calling him "Crooked Joe" and claiming that he was unfit to run for president. Trump also attacked Biden's immigration policies, an issue that he has made a focal point of his campaign.
Legal challenges could potentially arise if Democrats were to try to replace Biden on the ticket. The Heritage Foundation's Oversight Project has been researching state protocols for changing the nominee on the ballot and has highlighted potential legal issues that Democrats may face in certain states. Speaker Mike Johnson suggested that replacing Biden as the nominee could face legal hurdles.
While Trump's allies gear up for a campaign assault on Kamala Harris, the dynamics of the race have become less clear following Biden's exit. Trump's prospects against Harris remain confident among Republicans, but the outcome of the 2024 presidential election is now shrouded in uncertainty.
