Three People Killed in Stolen Vehicle Crash on Des Moines' South Side

Des Moines police have identified the three individuals who tragically lost their lives in a devastating crash involving a stolen vehicle on the city's south side. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, prompting a rapid response from law enforcement and emergency services.

According to authorities, a Des Moines Police Department detective came across a stolen 2013 Hyundai Sonata near Ninth Street and Center Street at approximately 12:45 p.m. The detective promptly alerted their colleagues and began closely monitoring the stolen vehicle's movements as it headed south through downtown.

The stolen car subsequently entered McRae Park from Southwest Ninth Street. As a marked patrol vehicle approached the park, the Hyundai veered off the road, successfully maneuvering around the patrol car. It then accelerated eastbound on Davis Avenue, reaching dangerously high speeds.

Despite the situation, the Des Moines Police Department affirms that officers did not initiate a pursuit as the stolen vehicle raced out of sight. Unfortunately, just minutes later, at 12:49 p.m., the crashed Hyundai was discovered in the 600 block of Davis Avenue.

Swiftly springing into action, officers on the scene immediately initiated life-saving efforts and swiftly called for emergency medical services. Tragically, the impact of the crash proved fatal for Jamarion Jackson, an 18-year-old, as well as Eric Vortes Jr. and James "JT" Taylor III, both 15 years old.

This devastating incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with stolen vehicles and reckless driving. The loss of these young lives is a heart-wrenching tragedy that has left the community mourning.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the theft and subsequent crash. As more information becomes available, the Des Moines Police Department will provide updates to ensure transparency and support for the affected families.

The community is urged to remain vigilant and report any information related to this incident or other suspicious activities to local law enforcement. Together, we can work towards preventing similar tragedies in the future.
