In a devastating accident that occurred late Saturday night, two individuals lost their lives while two Charlotte high school students are now fighting for their lives in critical condition. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has confirmed that Sophie Gordon, a 16-year-old junior at Myers Park High School, and Robert Fox, a 19-year-old from Illinois, were the victims of the tragic single-vehicle crash in Asheville.

The accident took place around 11:30 p.m. along Interstate 40 when the driver attempted to exit the highway using the 53B off-ramp. Unfortunately, the vehicle was traveling at a high speed, rendering the driver unable to negotiate the ramp safely. As a result, the car veered off the left side of the roadway, ultimately colliding with a tree.

Reports have indicated that a total of six people were inside the vehicle at the time of the accident. Thankfully, the driver and another passenger sustained only minor injuries. However, two juniors from Charlotte Catholic High School are currently in critical condition and receiving intensive care at Mission Hospital in Asheville.

Sophie Gordon's untimely demise has left the Myers Park High School community grieving the loss of a beloved student. Similarly, the Charlotte Catholic High School community is rallying around their two critically injured students, hoping for their swift recovery.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is now investigating the circumstances leading up to the accident. While it remains unclear at this time whether any factors such as alcohol or distracted driving contributed to the crash, authorities will be conducting a thorough examination to determine the cause.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of Sophie Gordon and Robert Fox, as well as the entire Charlotte high school community affected by this tragic incident.
