In a shocking incident, an 82-year-old former mayor, Joe Cornelius Sr., and his daughter, Keisha Miles, 31, were shot and killed in Minden, a town in northwest Louisiana. The tragic event unfolded on Sunday morning, with a 10-year-old boy allegedly claiming responsibility for the shootings.
According to Minden Police Chief Jared McIver, the young boy confessed to the authorities that he had shot and killed Cornelius and Miles. The exact relationship between the boy and the victims remains unclear. Both victims were discovered with multiple gunshot wounds at their residence.
Neighbors reported hearing an argument between Cornelius and the boy, followed by the sound of gunshots. "About eight gunshots. Pow, pow, pow and then pow, pow, pow," recounted one neighbor to KSLA-TV, expressing shock and disbelief at the tragic turn of events.
Cornelius, a highly respected figure in the community, had a long history of dedicated public service. He served as a member of the Minden city council, briefly assuming the role of mayor in 2013 after the previous mayor's passing. Additionally, he had worked as a former sheriff's deputy and marshal, leaving an indelible mark on the community.
As a pillar of the town's Black community, Cornelius also played a vital role in various initiatives aimed at youth development and fostering awareness of African American history. The community has expressed deep sadness over the loss, highlighting his commitment and dedication to the betterment of Minden.
Minden Mayor Nick Cox extended his condolences in a statement on social media, saying, "Joe Cornelius' years of service to Minden were marked by his commitment and dedication to the betterment of our community. On a personal note, I am grateful for his friendship and the many ways he supported me and others in our city."
The shocking incident has left Minden residents shaken and mourning the loss of two community members. The ease at which a young child reportedly gained access to a firearm has also raised concerns among locals. "It makes my heart bleed," lamented a resident in an interview with KSLA-TV. "It makes me sad how a little 10-year-old kid can get a gun."
The investigation into the tragic shooting is ongoing, as authorities work to gather more information surrounding the circumstances leading up to the incident. The young boy remains in custody as the community comes to terms with the devastating loss of a beloved former mayor and his daughter.
