In a sad turn of events, a female student was fatally shot during a dispute at Kennesaw State University over the weekend. The incident occurred in front of the Austin Residence Complex and resulted in the suspect fleeing the campus. The university confirmed the tragic incident, expressing their heartfelt condolences to the victim's family and friends.
KSU President Kathy Schwaig issued a statement on Sunday, stating, "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the victim's family and friends during this incredibly difficult time." The university revealed that the suspect, who is not a KSU student, has been identified and now faces charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
The Office of Emergency Management at KSU had previously issued an alert on Saturday afternoon regarding an armed intruder on campus. Shortly after, it was announced that an individual had been shot, urging students to avoid the South Campus housing area due to police activity. Thankfully, by Sunday, the suspect had been apprehended by local authorities, eliminating any further threat to the campus community.
KSU's police department is currently collaborating with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to further investigate the matter. A spokesperson from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed their involvement in assisting the university with the investigation.
This marks the second instance this year in which an armed intruder has been reported at Kennesaw State University. In January, police were called to campus following a similar report of "armed suspects," but fortunately, the situation was resolved without any shootings or fatalities.
As the community mourns the loss of a young life, Kennesaw State University remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its students. Although this incident has shaken the campus, the university will continue working diligently to address any security concerns and provide support to those affected by this tragedy.
