Two high school boys tragically lost their lives after accepting a dare from friends to jump from a South Carolina bridge, with one brave soul attempting to save his friend but also succumbing to the strong current. The victims have been identified as Rayan Alnasser, 16, and Zakaria Chaar, 15, both sophomores at D.W. Daniel High School.

According to officials from the Pickens County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred late Saturday when the boys were egged on by friends who had gathered at the Twelve Mile River Bridge. One of the boys jumped first but immediately encountered distress upon landing, possibly due to an awkward posture. The second boy, showing immense courage, leapt into the water in an attempt to rescue his friend but was also dragged underwater by the forceful current.

Concerned about their whereabouts, a teen companion called emergency services at 10:28 p.m. on Saturday, reporting that Alnasser and Chaar were missing in the water. First responders quickly arrived at the scene and extensive search operations were initiated. Divers, boats, sonar technology, and even cadaver dogs were deployed in the search effort.

On Monday around 11 a.m., the bodies of the two young boys were discovered using sonar in an area of Lake Hartwell approximately 15 feet deep.

Authorities have expressed concern about dangerous trends on social media, such as TikTok challenges, that encourage risky behavior like bridge jumping. Chief Deputy Chuck James emphasized that such activities are inherently unsafe and cautioned against participating in them.

The School District of Pickens County issued a statement conveying deep condolences and prayers to the families of the two students. Recognizing the profound impact on the entire community, the district highlighted its commitment to offering support and care to students, staff, and families during this difficult time. The district has a dedicated team of counselors, psychologists, and mental health professionals ready to assist those in need.

Classmates of Alnasser and Chaar, many grappling with grief for the first time, remember them as friendly and kind individuals. The loss has deeply affected the school community, but there is a sense of unity as the community comes together to mourn their tragic deaths.
