In a devastating turn of events, a 21-year-old daredevil skier lost his life while attempting a daring jump over a Colorado highway. Dallas LeBeau, known for his thrill-seeking nature, tragically failed to clear the 40-foot gap on Highway 40 in Grand County, leading to fatal consequences.
LeBeau's childhood friend, Devin Shirk, revealed that the young skier had always sought to push the boundaries in his pursuits. "He wanted to do things that nobody else had done. He always said his birthday was the same day as Evil Knievel," Shirk told FOX31, referencing the renowned stunt legend famous for his motorcycle jumps.
The incident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon when authorities received a distress call reporting LeBeau's accident. Upon their arrival, first responders discovered the skier unconscious and not breathing. Despite the efforts of a good Samaritan who had initiated CPR, LeBeau succumbed to his injuries before medical assistance could stabilize him.
According to a statement issued by the Grand County Sheriff's Office, initial investigations indicated that LeBeau had attempted a high-risk skiing stunt, aiming to clear the width of Highway 40. Regrettably, he lacked the necessary speed and distance, resulting in a catastrophic landing on the highway pavement.
Although LeBeau had taken precautions by donning a helmet and other protective gear, the impact proved too severe for the safety measures to mitigate. Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin emphasized the inherent risks associated with backcountry skiing in Colorado, acknowledging that yesterday was a tragic reminder of the dangers it entails, as reported by CBS Colorado.
Having been close friends with LeBeau since childhood, Shirk has started a GoFundMe campaign to support the skier's grieving family. In the campaign description, Shirk expressed the deep bond they shared, revealing that LeBeau had been skiing since the tender age of 2.
The untimely demise of Dallas LeBeau serves as a stark reminder of the perils involved in extreme sports and high-risk activities. As the community mourns the loss of a young life full of potential, it is important to reflect on the importance of practicing caution and adhering to safety protocols in such endeavors.
