### Tragic Shooting at Mississippi Homecoming Celebration Leaves Three Dead, Eight Injured
In the early hours of Saturday, central Mississippi witnessed a tragic incident as gunfire erupted at an outdoor gathering, killing three people and injuring eight others. The celebration, which involved several hundred individuals, took a dark turn when at least two assailants opened fire following a quarrel among attendees, according to Holmes County Sheriff Willie March.
Held approximately five miles outside of Lexington, Mississippi, the event was organized to commemorate a homecoming football victory by the Holmes County Consolidated School. Although the game had ended hours earlier, the celebration continued late into the night, drawing a crowd of 200 to 300 people. Sheriff March described the scene as chaotic, stating, "The shooting just started and people started running."
Victims of the tragic shooting included two 19-year-olds and a 25-year-old. The injured were urgently airlifted to local hospitals for treatment. Deputies at the scene have been collecting ammunition to determine the number of firearms involved in the incident.
The sheriff also highlighted that such violent outbreaks among young men are not uncommon in this area of nearly 16,000 residents. "It's hard to see what they are fighting over. I don't think they are fighting over turf or drugs," March explained. "These are young men walking around with weapons. I wish I had an answer."
Lexington, which lies 60 miles north of Jackson, is now grappling with the aftermath of this devastating event as authorities continue their investigation.
