In a devastating incident at the construction site of the University of Chicago Cancer Center, David O'Donnell, a dedicated construction worker, tragically lost his life. The 27-year-old fell eight stories while working on the project, leaving his family, friends, and colleagues in shock and grief.

David's youngest brother, Kevin O'Donnell, expressed his anguish, stating that this tragedy should have never happened. Speaking with ABC7, Kevin described his brother as an amazing role model and the hardest worker, someone he always admired. He reiterated that he would not wish this pain upon anyone, not even his worst enemy.

Hailing from south suburban Oak Forest, David was remembered as the best big brother ever by his family. Kevin spoke highly of David's work ethic, highlighting his determination and commitment. David was employed as a technical engineer at his father's company, Hi-Tech Stake Out.

The incident occurred when David and another worker fell from a scaffold amid gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 40 mph. While David lost his life at the scene, the other worker sustained critical injuries and was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

Kevin shared the heart-wrenching moment he learned about his brother's passing. Moments after returning from work, he walked into his home to be informed by his mother about the tragedy.

David's father, too distraught to speak on camera, expressed his grief over the loss of his son. He emphasized that his son was supposed to be safe at work, questioning how such a terrible accident could occur. He described David as not just a good person, but a great man, and expressed his deep love for him.

Following the incident, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) initiated an inspection with New Horizon Steel, the company employing the injured worker. OSHA noted that New Horizon Steel has no previous history of OSHA violations. Turner Construction, the general contractor responsible for the project, has had no violations recorded in Illinois over the past five years.

As investigations carry on, Kevin honors his brother's memory by cherishing the impact David had on his life in his short time on earth. He remembers David as a dedicated sibling, a remarkable role model, and a loving individual who touched the lives of his friends and family.

The University of Chicago Medical Center, where the incident occurred, mourns alongside David's loved ones, recognizing the immense loss felt by his untimely passing. It is a stark reminder of the risks faced by those working in the construction industry and the importance of prioritizing safety measures to prevent further tragedies like this in the future.
