Three of the ten inmates who managed to orchestrate an escape from a New Orleans jail earlier this month have been apprehended again, authorities announced on Monday. These re-arrests took place in two separate states - one individual was detained in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the other two in Walker County, Texas. The information was shared by the Louisiana State Police on the platform X.
Law enforcement officials revealed that two escapees are still at large. Specific details about the recaptures made on Monday were not immediately disclosed.
The breakout occurred on May 16 when the inmates exploited a faulty cell door, navigated through a gap behind a toilet, scaled a barbed-wire fence, and vanished under the cover of night. Their absence was only discovered during a routine headcount the following morning. Notably, graffiti left at the scene included the smug message "To Easy LoL," complete with an arrow pointing to the escape route.
The inmates recaptured on Monday were identified as Lenton Vanburen, Leo Tate, and Jermaine Donald. Previous captures have included Dkenan Dennis, Corey Boyd, Gary C. Price, Kendell Myles, and Robert Moody.
Most of the escapees were awaiting trial or sentencing on serious charges, including murder. The escape incident later led to the arrest of a jail maintenance worker accused of disabling the water to the toilet as part of the escape plan. The worker claimed he had been threatened by one of the inmates to comply with their demands.
Additionally, four other individuals have been arrested under suspicion of aiding the inmates after their escape. The incident has spurred both city and state officials to scrutinize security measures at the jail, pointing out several lapses that likely facilitated the escape.
