In a recent episode of the podcast Soul Boom, actress Angela Kinsey, known for her role as Angela Martin in the hit TV show The Office, expressed her discomfort regarding certain jokes about her Christian faith that were included in the script. Kinsey discussed her religious beliefs with former co-star Rainn Wilson, who portrayed Dwight on the show.
During the interview, Wilson asked Kinsey about playing the character of an "uptight Christian," despite her upbringing which included a "warm, meaningful relationship" with her faith and the church. Kinsey revealed that there were jokes written for her character that she believed stereotyped Christians and did not accurately represent their views.
Kinsey pinpointed an episode in the show's third season where her character delivers a line that she found to be "super judge-y" towards Oscar, a gay character in the series. Feeling uncomfortable with the joke and the way it invoked Jesus, Kinsey took it upon herself to speak with Greg Daniels, the producer and showrunner.
"I can't," Kinsey told Daniels, expressing her discontent with the particular joke. "I don't feel good about that. I don't feel like that's what Jesus represented to me."
To her relief, Daniels heard her concerns and removed the joke from the episode titled "Gay Witch Hunt," which already featured several sensitive topics. Reflecting on the incident, Kinsey emphasized the importance of portraying her character as a well-rounded individual with depth, rather than relying on stereotypes.
While Kinsey did not speak up on every occasion, she acknowledged that there were one or two instances where she found the jokes to be overly stereotypical and one-dimensional. However, she maintained her belief in the character's complexity and looked to Daniels for understanding and support.
The discussion between Kinsey and Wilson on the Soul Boom podcast highlights the open dialogue that exists among the cast members of The Office regarding sensitive topics and their willingness to address problematic jokes. It also reflects Kinsey's commitment to ensuring that her character reflects a more nuanced representation of Christians and their beliefs.
As fans continue to revisit the beloved sitcom, Kinsey's candid conversation sheds light on the behind-the-scenes decision-making process and the dedication of actors like her to portray their characters faithfully and respectfully.
