In an alarming incident that unfolded at an apartment complex pool in Euless, Texas, a woman has been arrested and accused of attempting to drown a 3-year-old Palestinian Muslim child. The suspect, identified as Elizabeth Wolf, allegedly targeted the child's mother after questioning her about their country of origin.
The incident occurred on May 19, when police responded to a disturbance between two women at the pool. Witnesses informed officers that an intoxicated woman, later identified as Elizabeth Wolf, had tried to drown a child and engaged in an argument with the child's mother.
According to the 32-year-old victim, Wolf questioned her origin and made derogatory statements about her lack of American identity, including other racial remarks. The mother was reportedly visibly Muslim, sporting a hijab and modest swimwear. Wolf also inquired whether two other children in the pool belonged to the mother before attempting to grab the 6-year-old boy. Fortunately, the boy managed to escape.
As the mother rushed to help her son, Wolf allegedly seized the opportunity to grab the 3-year-old daughter and forcefully submerged her underwater. The mother bravely intervened and managed to rescue her daughter, who was coughing up water and crying for help. Disturbingly, Wolf also snatched the mother's headscarf off and used it to beat her, as per the allegations made by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
Both children were assessed by medical professionals at the scene and cleared of any physical harm. Wolf was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication as she attempted to flee. She now faces serious charges, including attempted capital murder and injury to a child. Authorities do not believe there was any pre-existing relationship between Wolf and the victim's mother.
The incident has left the traumatized 3-year-old child in fear, hiding whenever the apartment door is opened, afraid that Wolf might come back to harm her again. The victim, identified by CAIR as "Mrs. H.," expressed her distress and stated, "We are American citizens, originally from Palestine, and I don't know where to go to feel safe with my kids. My country is facing a war, and we are facing that hate here."
The heinous act has sparked outrage and condemnation from various quarters. Shaimaa Zayan, CAIR's Austin operations manager, condemned the incident as a disturbing manifestation of bigotry, where individuals believe they have the right to determine the fate of others based on factors such as religion, language, and nationality.
This incident comes as CAIR reported a significant increase in hate crimes and discrimination against Muslims. In 2020, the organization received 8,061 complaints nationally, marking the highest number in its 30-year history, surpassing even the aftermath of 9/11.
State Representative Salman Bhojani, who represents the Texas House district where the incident occurred, expressed shock and disgust at the alleged racist attack. Bhojani reaffirmed that hate has no place in Euless, District 92, or anywhere in the state.
At this time, it is unclear whether Elizabeth Wolf has legal representation. The case serves as a chilling reminder of the importance of combating hate crimes and fostering an inclusive society that values diversity and understanding.
