In a frightening incident on Sunday afternoon, a 14-year-old boy was bitten by a shark while swimming at a beach in North Carolina. The incident took place around 12:30 p.m. at North Topsail Beach, according to North Topsail Beach Police Chief William Younginer.

Thankfully, beachgoers immediately sprang into action, coming to the aid of the teenager before emergency medical services (EMS) arrived at the scene. They promptly pulled the injured boy out of the water and applied towels and pressure to help slow down the bleeding, Chief Younginer stated.

Coincidentally, officers and EMTs were already present at the beach, responding to another call. Thus, the response time was impressively quick, with emergency personnel reaching the scene in just two minutes, the police chief said.

A police officer swiftly applied a tourniquet to the injured boy's leg, while EMS worked diligently to stabilize his condition. The teen was then transported to the closest trauma center, Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital, where doctors were able to successfully repair his leg. Chief Younginer reassured that the young survivor is expected to be released from the hospital soon.

Chief Younginer expressed his appreciation for the bystanders who promptly came to the teenager's aid, commending their actions as crucial in saving his life. Their rapid response undoubtedly played a significant role in the successful outcome of this unfortunate incident.

In a separate and tragic development on the same day, a renowned surfer and lifeguard lost his life due to a shark attack near the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. Emergency officials confirmed the incident, which serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of interacting with marine wildlife.
