15-year-old Arrested in Connection with Deadly Knife Attack at German Festival
Authorities in Germany have arrested a 15-year-old in connection with a horrific knife attack that took place at a festival in Solingen. The attack left three people dead and eight others injured. The suspect, who had been on the run for hours following the incident, is now under custody. However, police have clarified that the teenager is not believed to be the primary attacker, but instead stands accused of failing to report the crime.
According to CNN, witnesses claimed that the teen had been in conversation with an unidentified individual about "intentions that would match with the crime" shortly before the attack occurred. Senior public prosecutor Markus Caspers stated in a news conference, reported by the Washington Post, that the suspect had not directly participated in the violent act.
Police Chief Markus Röhrl revealed that multiple knives were found at the scene, indicating the possibility of a terrorist motive. The attacker specifically targeted the victims' necks, as per the Washington Post. The three fatalities consisted of two men, aged 67 and 56, and a 56-year-old woman. Among the eight injured, four are currently in serious condition and receiving treatment in the hospital.
The deadly incident took place at around 9:30 p.m. during the "Festival of Diversity," an event commemorating Solingen's 650th anniversary. The attack occurred near a stage where a musical performance was taking place, according to the police. In response to the tragedy, organizers canceled the remaining lineup of the festival.
Mayor Tim Kurzbach expressed his grief over the attack on Facebook, stating, "This evening, we in Solingen are all in shock. We all wanted to celebrate our city's anniversary together and now have dead and wounded to lament. It breaks my heart that an attack on our city happened."
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, with the hope of uncovering more details about the motive behind the attack. The arrest of the 15-year-old is seen as a significant step in the ongoing efforts to bring justice to the victims and their families.
