Taylor Swift's Endorsement of Kamala Harris Has Minimal Impact on Voters, Poll Shows
In a recent poll conducted by ABC News/Ipsos, it has been revealed that pop singer Taylor Swift's endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris had little effect on potential voters. Despite her massive reach and influence, only 6 percent of U.S. adults stated that Swift's endorsement made them more likely to vote for Harris.
Swift took to her Instagram account, which boasts a staggering 284 million followers, to officially declare her support for Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, in the 2024 Presidential Election. This announcement came just after the first presidential debate between Harris and former President Donald Trump.
However, the poll showed that a slightly higher percentage (13 percent) of respondents claimed that Swift's endorsement made them less likely to support Harris. Notably, the majority of this group consisted of Trump supporters. Additionally, a significant 81 percent of adults stated that Swift's endorsement had no impact on their voting decision.
Interestingly, the Harris campaign wasted no time capitalizing on Swift's endorsement by illustrating their views on Trump through references to Swift's songs. In a press release, they referred to Trump as "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived," citing a track from Swift's latest album, The Tortured Poets Department. The campaign expressed that voters are ready to "Forget That He Existed" and move on from the chaos and division of the Trump era.
While the survey revealed that 58 percent of respondents believed Harris won the ABC News debate against Trump, indicating a favorable view of the Vice President, the preferences of voters have not significantly changed. The race remains close, with 51 percent supporting Harris and 46 percent favoring Trump.
Notably, Swift's endorsement of Biden in 2020 and her efforts to encourage voter registration have not gone unnoticed. When she directed her Instagram followers to Vote.org in September 2023, over 35,000 registrations were recorded. Similarly, her recent endorsement post for Harris received nearly 406,000 clicks on the vote.gov link.
According to polling aggregator FiveThirtyEight, Harris is currently leading Trump by 2.6 points, with respective national polling averages of 48 percent and 45.4 percent. However, both candidates have experienced a slight decline since Tuesday's polls. Nate Silver's presidential model also places Harris ahead of Trump by 2.4 points.
As the election draws nearer, it remains to be seen how endorsements and campaigns will impact voter choices. While Taylor Swift's endorsement may not have had a significant impact on this particular poll, her influence and ability to engage with her massive fan base should not be underestimated.
