In a Lincoln County court on Monday morning, Justin Rackley entered a plea of not guilty to all three counts of First-Degree Murder. Rackley, who was taken into custody on Saturday, stands accused of fatally shooting three adults in Sioux Falls.
Currently, Rackley is being held at the Minnehaha County Jail on a substantial $3 million cash-only bond. His next court appearance has been scheduled for June 25.
According to available records, Rackley had previously resided in Texas, where in 2020, he faced charges of Obstruction and Resisting Arrest. It was during that same year that he relocated to South Dakota.
The victims of the shooting have been identified as 43-year-old Kellie Reaves, who had been living on S. Drexel Drive since 2014, and 43-year-old Daniel Carl Kemnitz, a Sioux Falls resident with recent residences in Renner and Brandon. The third victim, 34-year-old Michael Thompson, was also from Sioux Falls.
Investigating the unfortunate incident, Lieutenant Aaron Nyberg of the Sioux Falls Police Department spoke about the initial gathering that took place around a fire pit. "It appeared to be for a firepit, bonfire at the residence, a social gathering. I can't speak definitively on the motive and the relationship between everybody there until we have more information," said Lt. Nyberg.
A firearm was discovered at the crime scene, and local security camera footage is currently being reviewed by the police. Additionally, autopsy results are expected to be available within a week, shedding more light on the details of the tragic event.
First Alert Investigator Beth Warden spoke with Rackley's father in Texas, who mentioned that the family has no comment at this time as the investigation is still ongoing.
As the trial proceedings continue, the community remains shaken by the senseless loss of three lives, with hopes that justice will be served for the victims and their families.
