Suspect Fatally Shot by Phoenix Police Officers Following Pursuit

In the early hours of Saturday morning, a suspect was killed in a shooting involving Phoenix police officers. The incident took place near the intersection of 25th Avenue and Buckeye Road at around 4 a.m., according to authorities.

The events leading up to the fatal encounter began when officers responded to reports of a shooting near 27th Avenue and Van Buren. The suspect, after allegedly firing multiple rounds near a group of people, fled the scene in his vehicle. Investigators quickly gathered information about the suspect's description and the vehicle he was driving.

Additional police units located the suspect's car in the area of 25th Avenue and Buckeye Road and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. However, upon seeing the officers, the suspect exited the vehicle and began running on Buckeye Road. Two officers gave chase in pursuit of the suspect.

According to Sgt. Rob Scherer, one of the pursuing officers, when the suspect reached toward his waistband, the officers perceived a threat and discharged their firearms. The suspect was struck by the shots and was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident.

Authorities later discovered a firearm at the crime scene. No other suspects are currently being sought in connection with the shooting.

This incident marks the 34th officer-involved shooting in the Phoenix area this year and the 58th in the state of Arizona in 2024. The Phoenix Police Department held a press briefing to provide information to the media concerning the fatal encounter.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and details surrounding the motive for the initial shooting and the suspect's identity have not been released at this time. The officers involved in the incident will be placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure in such cases, while the investigation progresses.
