In a tragic incident earlier this week, 49-year-old Stephen Mark Peterman was shot multiple times while walking his dog near his home on Amarillo Avenue in northwest Austin. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old William Jewel Daniels from San Antonio, has been arrested and charged with murder.

According to the arrest affidavit, Peterman was found unresponsive in the street and pronounced dead at the scene early Monday morning. Investigators discovered that Daniels' left palm print was found on the rear driver's side door of Peterman's work truck, which was parked nearby with a shattered window.

Surveillance video footage from a nearby home captured the sound of six gunshots followed by a red hatchback vehicle fleeing the scene at a high speed. The vehicle matched the description of Daniels' registered 2012 Hyundai Veloster. Detectives found no known connection between Daniels and Peterman or the neighborhood where the shooting occurred.

Based on the evidence gathered so far, investigators believe that Peterman unintentionally interrupted Daniels while he was burglarizing the work vehicle, leading to the fatal shooting. The motive for the alleged burglary remains unclear.

Shortly after the incident, Daniels was taken into custody and later booked into the Travis County Jail on a murder charge. The investigation is still ongoing as authorities continue to gather all available evidence and interview potential witnesses.

As the community grapples with this shocking act of violence, neighbors are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their area. Law enforcement is working diligently to bring justice to the victim's family and ensure the safety of the community.
