In a tragic incident, a Harris County Precinct 4 Deputy, identified as Maher Husseini, was gunned down while on his way to work on Tuesday afternoon. The suspect, described as an Asian/Middle Eastern man between 35 and 40 years old, was arrested after he drove his vehicle into Galveston Bay, sparking a dramatic water rescue operation.

According to the Houston Police Department, the shooting took place along the 8900 block of Richmond Avenue in southwest Houston. Deputy Husseini was shot multiple times around 12:35 p.m., as he was caught at the intersection of Richmond Avenue and Fondren. Eyewitnesses recounted that the suspect pulled up in his vehicle, approached the deputy, and opened fire, leading to Husseini suffering fatal injuries.

Constable Mark Herman's office confirmed the devastating news, stating that Deputy Husseini was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead. The constable's office expressed their condolences and assured that Constable Mark Herman was on his way to the hospital to support the family of the fallen deputy.

Husseini had been serving with the Harris County Precinct 4 since 2021 and had recently received a promotion. He was responsible for patrolling the South-Central district. The motive for the attack, as well as any potential connection between the suspect and Husseini, remains unclear at this time.

Following the shooting, the suspect managed to flee the scene. However, law enforcement later spotted him in the League City area. A brief chase with a City Marshal ensued, before the suspect made the drastic decision to drive his vehicle into Galveston Bay near the causeway.

Authorities swiftly responded to the scene, with boats deployed to rescue the suspect from the water. The suspect put up resistance during the arrest and sustained dog bites from a police K9 while being subdued.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement agencies are working to determine the motive behind this brutal attack on Deputy Maher Husseini. The loss of yet another law enforcement officer has sent shockwaves through the community, reminding us of the dangers faced by those who bravely protect and serve.

The Harris County Precinct 4 and Constable Mark Herman's office are mourning the loss of Deputy Husseini and are providing support to his family during this difficult time. The community has come together to express their deep sadness and appreciation for his dedicated service.
