In a poignant tribute to the victims of the Columbine High School massacre, retired principal Frank DeAngelis continues to recite their names daily, drawing strength and purpose from their memories. April 20, 2022, marked the 25th anniversary of the tragic event that shook the nation.

On that fateful morning in 1999, DeAngelis was in his office at the Littleton, Colo., school when reports of gunfire reached him. Initially thinking it was a senior prank, his worst nightmare quickly turned into reality as he found himself facing the gunmen, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold.

Without hesitation, DeAngelis took immediate action, guiding 25 girls into the gymnasium to keep them safe. Amid screams for help, he unlocked the gym door, finding solace in the first key that opened it effortlessly. The sound of gunshots grew ominously close, as the tragic events unfolded.

Less than an hour later, 12 students, one teacher, and the two shooters were dead, with an additional 21 injured. At the time, the Columbine High School shooting held the unfortunate distinction of being the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history. Coach Dave Sanders, DeAngelis' colleague and mentor, tragically lost his life while protecting students, diverting the attention of one of the gunmen away from DeAngelis.

DeAngelis admitted to falling into a dark period immediately after the shooting. It was with the encouragement of his pastor, who believed he had been spared for a reason, that he found the strength to move forward and help others. The retired principal still carries that message close to his heart today.

In a demonstration of resilience and dedication to prevent future tragedies, DeAngelis and other school administrators founded the Principal Recovery Network in 2019. This organization provides guidance and support to campus officials following school shootings or crises. Additionally, DeAngelis published a memoir titled "They Call Me 'Mr. De'" in the same year, chronicling the events of April 20, 1999, and his personal journey of healing and growth.

The Principal Recovery Network's 2022 publication, "Guide to Recovery," has become a valuable resource for schools rebuilding after violent events, offering much-needed guidance and support during challenging times.

Ahead of the 25th anniversary, DeAngelis spoke with a group of current Columbine students, inspiring them with his refusal to succumb to despair and evil. His words resonated with the attendees as he reminded them that hope must prevail over darkness.

The solemn remembrance of the Columbine shooting took place at an emotionally charged vigil, featuring 13 empty chairs symbolizing the lives lost. Approximately 150 individuals recited "never forgotten" and reflected on each victim's name, signified by the tolling of a bell. Tom Mauser, a grieving father, recalled his son Daniel Mauser, a Columbine sophomore who was tragically killed in the shooting, urging attendees to honor all the victims and their families.
