Super PAC Runs Ads Targeting Kamala Harris's Jewish Connection to Undercut Support Among Arab Americans in Michigan

A super PAC with Republican ties, known as Future Coalition PAC, has launched a series of digital ads in Michigan, aimed at diminishing support for Kamala Harris among the state's Arab American population. The ads, which have been running on YouTube, focus on Harris's husband, Doug Emhoff, who is Jewish, and emphasize the vice president's support for Israel.
With a total expenditure of nearly $60,000, according to Google's Ads Transparency Center, the ads highlight Harris's stance on Israel while prominently featuring images of the Israeli flag. A recurring theme in many of the spots is portraying Emhoff as Harris's "top advisor," subtly playing into antisemitic stereotypes that American Jews have dual loyalties to both the US and Israel.
These ads appear to have an underlying intention of fueling divisions within the Democratic coalition, which have been further amplified in the aftermath of the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas. The Biden administration's steadfast support for Israel's military operations in Gaza has generated discontent among pro-Palestinian factions within the Democratic Party, leading to nationwide demonstrations calling for an immediate ceasefire.
The focus on Michigan is crucial as the state boasts a significant Arab and Muslim American voter base, many of whom sympathize with the Palestinian cause. According to Emgage, a group dedicated to enhancing the political power of Muslim Americans, nearly 146,000 Muslim Americans cast their votes in the Michigan general election last year. In 2016, Joe Biden won the state by a margin of 150,000 votes. Recent polls indicate a closely contested race this year between Harris and former President Donald Trump.
One of the Future Coalition ads specifically targets Emhoff, using images of him wearing a yarmulke and visiting the Auschwitz concentration camp. The ad mentions Emhoff's Jewish background and positions Harris as a strong leader. Another ad begins by stating that Harris has chosen "the right side" and consistently stands with Israel and the Jewish people. The ad also highlights Harris hosting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.
The Future Coalition ads aim to create a narrative that portrays Harris as a supporter of Israel and aligns her with the Jewish community. However, their messaging risks exacerbating existing tensions within the Democratic Party, as supporters of a free Palestine feel marginalized by the perceived bias.
Future Coalition PAC, which was established this month, has yet to disclose its donors or fundraising activities with the Federal Election Commission. However, some filings by the group suggest its affiliation with the GOP, as Cabell Hobbs, who served as the treasurer for a super PAC supporting Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' potential 2024 presidential bid, is listed as the assistant treasurer for Future Coalition PAC.
CNN has reached out to the super PAC for comment but has yet to receive a response.
While the impact of these ads on Michigan's Arab American voters remains to be seen, their role in magnifying existing divisions within the Democratic Party underscores the complex dynamics of identity politics and foreign policy in electoral battlegrounds.
