Former Donald Trump adviser, Steve Bannon, will not be serving his prison sentence at a "Club Fed" facility, as he had hoped. Instead, Bannon is set to report to the low-security federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut, next month, according to sources familiar with the arrangements.

Bannon was recently sentenced to four months in prison for contempt of Congress after being convicted by a federal jury two years ago for failing to comply with a subpoena in the US House's January 6, 2021, investigation. While Bannon appealed the case, a federal judge ruled that he must turn himself in by July 1. Initially, his attorneys believed he would be eligible for a minimal-security prison camp, but due to a pending criminal case against him in New York, Bannon does not qualify for the lowest-level prison setup.

The pending case in New York accuses Bannon of defrauding donors in the "We Build the Wall" campaign, which aimed to fund a border wall between the US and Mexico. Bannon is set to go to trial for these charges in September.

Bannon's lawyers argued against his imprisonment this summer, as it would prevent him from being a meaningful advisor in the ongoing national campaign, and potentially impact the November election, where he is seen as an important source of information for many Americans. The DC US Circuit Court of Appeals is expected to make a decision on whether to keep Bannon out of prison for the time being.

The prison in Danbury, Connecticut, where Bannon will serve his sentence, houses both white-collar criminals and potentially violent and sex offenders in its male population. Unlike prison camps, the facility has a noticeable barrier, colloquially referred to as "the wall," separating it from the outside world. It does not have individual cells, but rather houses inmates in open pods. The prison accommodates over 1,000 male prisoners, while its adjacent prison camp for women was made famous in the memoir that inspired the TV show "Orange is the New Black."

If Bannon's state trial proceedings in New York coincide with his federal sentence, he may need to be held in a New York City facility, such as the infamous Rikers Island jail. His federal prison term is expected to run through October, unless an appeals court intervenes. Bannon, along with another Trump adviser, Peter Navarro, will not be released early from their four-month sentences as their terms do not include time under supervised release.

Bannon's connection to Trump and the political world remains strong, as he recently spoke at a conservative gathering in Detroit, where Trump also made an appearance. Bannon vowed consequences for Trump's opponents and federal law enforcement authorities if Trump wins a second term as president.

Boris Epshteyn, a prominent legal adviser in Trump's orbit, has been involved in Bannon's defense strategy. Bannon mentioned on his podcast that he received a call from the former president.

As Bannon prepares to serve his prison term, his presence behind bars during the Republican National Convention in mid-July is inevitable.
