### Stephen Colbert Critiques VP Debate Performances on "The Late Show"
On Tuesday night, Stephen Colbert delved into the recent vice presidential debate during his opening monologue on "The Late Show," dissecting the responses from candidates Tim Walz and JD Vance on issues like the January 6th Capitol riot and gun violence. Colbert humorously remarked on the demeanor of both politicians, describing JD Vance as looking like a "business lemur on beta blockers" and Tim Walz as seeming like an "over-caffeinated, likable coach."
Colbert highlighted that JD Vance tended to use vague and patriotic rhetoric during the debate, particularly when downplaying Donald Trump's involvement in the January 6th Capitol attack. Vance noted that Trump peacefully transferred power on January 20th, ignoring the preceding chaos. Colbert jabbed at this narrative, comparing it to a toddler who only focuses on settling down peacefully after a tantrum.
In his critique, Colbert also supported Walz's view that the January 6th insurrection was not comparable to Hillary Clinton's complaints about Russian disinformation during the 2016 election. While Vance attempted to equate the insurrection with Facebook ads, Colbert mockingly corrected this, humorously stating what such hypothetical ads might look like.
Colbert also noted Vance's reluctance to directly answer questions about the 2020 election results, mockingly suggesting that Vance prefers to focus on future events, humorously alluding to potential future insurrections involving “two shamans.”
The late-night host then discussed the candidates' takes on gun violence in schools. He pointed out that Vance's responses seemed to avoid solutions that might be effective, leaving much to be desired in addressing this pressing issue.
Colbert concluded his monologue by comparing the 90-minute debate to an awkward Thanksgiving dinner with a nervous uncle and smug nephew, expressing relief that such an ordeal only happens every four years.
