In a star-studded evening that brought together former President Barack Obama, renowned actor George Clooney, and actress Julia Roberts, President Joe Biden's campaign has set a new record for a single Democratic fundraiser. The event, which took place in Los Angeles early Saturday morning, raised an astounding $28 million, surpassing the previous record of $26 million set by a March fundraiser in New York City.
The highly anticipated affair featured a moderated interview of President Biden and Obama by talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, with the focus on healthcare. Kimmel, a staunch supporter of the Affordable Care Act after his son underwent open-heart surgery in 2017, has been a vocal advocate for the legislation passed by Obama and Biden.
Hosted by Clooney and Roberts, the event attracted a plethora of Hollywood stars, including Jason Bateman, Jack Black, Kathryn Hahn, and Sheryl Lee Ralph. The Biden campaign also noted the presence of other prominent celebrities such as Keegan-Michael Key, Connie Britton, Misha Collins, Jeri Ryan, Jonathan Del Arco, Mandana Dayani, Blake Cooper Griffin, and Adam Met.
Tickets for the event ranged from $250 to a staggering $500,000, with an option for grassroots donors to contribute $20 to virtually attend the fundraiser. The campaign emphasized that the funds raised during the event will be allocated towards expanding their grassroots operation, including field offices and additional staff, as well as towards paid media.
This record-breaking fundraising achievement comes at a critical time in the race between President Biden and presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump. A recent CBS News poll revealed a neck-and-neck competition between the two candidates in battleground states, with Biden leading by a mere 1 point.
Notably, George Clooney's involvement in the fundraiser generated intrigue, following his reported call to a White House advisor expressing concerns over Biden's criticism of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Clooney's wife, Amal, is involved with the ICC. Biden had voiced his disapproval of the ICC's arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant.
The Biden campaign's decision to send out a fundraising text message from Clooney indicates the actor's sincere support for the Biden-Harris ticket. "I'm not exaggerating when I say that this election is the fight of our lives," Clooney's message read. "It's a choice between those who want to pull America back to the past, and those who want to move America into the future."
While President Biden has held a significant financial advantage throughout most of the campaign, the Trump campaign has also witnessed a surge in fundraising. Following his conviction on 34 felony charges related to his "hush money" trial, Donald Trump's campaign reported raising an impressive $52.8 million in just 24 hours. Additionally, they achieved a record-breaking $50.5 million at an April fundraiser in Florida.
The outcome of this unprecedented fundraiser highlights the unwavering enthusiasm and commitment from the media and entertainment industry towards the Biden-Harris campaign. As the battle for the presidency intensifies, both parties are harnessing their financial resources to advance their agendas and secure victory in what has been widely regarded as the most crucial election of our time.
