In a shocking twist to the legal proceedings surrounding the Rust movie shooting incident, the special prosecutor who resigned just before the involuntary manslaughter charges against actor Alec Baldwin were dismissed has spoken out about Baldwin's "horseplay" with the gun that fatally killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Erlinda Ocampo Johnson, the former special prosecutor, expressed her belief that Baldwin's actions could be viewed as "reckless", based on evidence and witness statements she had evaluated during her involvement in the case.

Johnson revealed that there were multiple clips from the filming on the set of Rust that indicated Baldwin had engaged in irresponsible behavior with the firearm. One particular witness testified that Baldwin had used him as a target to shoot blanks at, which Johnson deemed highly inappropriate considering the guns used on set were real firearms. "You don't use another person as a target, as a human target, so that could potentially be reckless," she stated.

While Johnson vehemently denied that her resignation was motivated by the public nature of the hearing on the handling of bullets and guns during the production of Rust, she did admit that her decision to step down was influenced by learning about crucial evidence that had been withheld from the defense team until recently. Johnson stated that she was not involved in the earlier proceedings and was unaware that a crew member had taken ammunition to the sheriff's department and provided it to the officers.

With a deep sense of ethical and moral obligation, Johnson emphasized that prosecutors are tasked with ensuring all evidence is properly disclosed to both the people and the defendant. Upon realizing that certain evidence had not been properly shared, she felt compelled to approach the judge and request to withdraw from the case, to prevent what she described as a "circus" of a hearing from taking place.

As the charges against Baldwin were ultimately dismissed by the judge, causing the actor to break down in tears, the nearly three-year legal battle over the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins came to an unexpected end. Hutchins, who worked as a cinematographer, lost her life when she was struck by a live bullet fired from a gun being used by Baldwin as a prop during filming.

The revelation of Baldwin's alleged reckless gun handling and the subsequent resignation of the special prosecutor have once again sparked nationwide discussions on set safety and the responsibility of actors when working with firearms on movie sets. As the dust settles on this legally complex case, many will continue to reflect on the precautions necessary to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.
