**Mass Migration from X to Bluesky Highlights Ongoing Social Media Turmoil**

Millions of users are abandoning Elon Musk's X platform in favor of Bluesky, spurred by significant changes in content moderation and increased incidence of offensive material on X. The exodus has fostered an online community on Bluesky that strongly contrasts Musk's platform.

The shift began after Musk took control of X, previously known as Twitter, and reduced the workforce dedicated to content moderation. This downsizing led to a marked increase in the use of profanities and slurs on X. For instance, the occurrence of a particular racist slur tripled in no time. Meanwhile, the 16.7 million users of Bluesky have become increasingly focused on policing online etiquette.

Many Bluesky users have taken measures to distance themselves from X, discouraging reposting screenshots or even mentioning it directly. Despite these efforts, X remains a hot topic on Bluesky, where members frequently complain about the hateful content on the former and Musk’s associations with Donald Trump. Prominent figures such as former CNN anchor Don Lemon have also transitioned to Bluesky, noting higher engagement levels despite having fewer followers compared to their previous platforms.

Bluesky enforces strict community guidelines to root out hate or extremist behavior targeting specific groups. However, the site’s etiquette extends beyond these official rules, with users creating mass block lists to exclude anyone following certain accounts. This liberal use of the blocking feature stands in contrast to the limitations seen on Musk’s X.

The migration has allowed left-leaning content, like critiques of perceived media biases and political concerns, to flourish on Bluesky. Well-known journalists such as Taylor Lorenz and Jennifer Rubin are active on the app, advocating for various social and political issues. Despite its growing user base, some liberals warn that relocating to Bluesky may contribute to the perception of the Left as being disconnected from working-class Americans.

While Bluesky attracted a million new users in the week post-Trump's election victory, other efforts to create X alternatives have yet to meet substantial success. Platforms like Mastodon and Truth Social, aligned with Left and Right-wing ideologies respectively, have relatively small user bases. The increasing dominance of Right-wing content on X and its declining popularity suggest that the platform may eventually encounter the same engagement issues as its counterparts.

Ultimately, whether X is genuinely becoming more Right-wing or if it's merely perceived that way largely depends on individual viewpoints. Users who stick to following non-Right-wing accounts may barely notice any shift. However, as more left-leaning users seek refuge on Bluesky, it remains to be seen how the dynamics between these platforms will evolve.
