In a bold move, soccer sensation Kylian Mbappé has spoken out against the recent surge of the far-right in the first round of the French elections. As the captain of France's national soccer team and with the team preparing for their Euro 2024 quarterfinal against Portugal, Mbappé took the opportunity to express his concerns during a media conference in Hamburg, Germany.
Labeling the first round results as "catastrophic," Mbappé called for urgent action, emphasizing the importance of voting. "There's an emergency, we can't let our country in the hands of these people, it's really urgent," he stated passionately. With France's political landscape in uncertainty after President Emmanuel Macron's decision to call snap parliamentary elections, the far-right party, National Rally (RN), has taken the lead in the recent polls.
In the first round, the RN clinched a notable 33.15% of the vote, surpassing both the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) coalition and President Macron's party, which slumped to third place. Should the RN assume power, it would mark the first time a far-right party entered the French government since World War II, although the final outcome remains uncertain ahead of Sunday's second round of voting.
Mbappé's plea for the French public to mobilize and vote comes with great significance. The soccer star emphasized the need for everyone to make the right choice, hoping for positive change and a rejection of extreme ideologies. This isn't the first time Mbappé has voiced his concerns about French politics while representing the national soccer team at Euro 2024. Last month, he highlighted the power of the younger generation and their opportunity to shape the future of the country.
Mbappé's teammate, Jules Kounde, also made a statement during the Euros tournament, expressing his disappointment with the direction France is heading. Kounde particularly criticized the rise of the National Rally and stressed the importance of blocking the extreme right, believing it wouldn't lead the country towards more freedom.
As Sunday approaches, the second round of voting holds immense significance for the future of France. Mbappé, Kounde, and others are urging the French public, especially the youth, to exercise their democratic rights. With the rise of the far-right threatening the values they hold dear, they hope to encourage a voter turnout that can shape the destiny of the nation.
