In a dramatic turn of events, Alice Guo, the mayor of Bamban in the Philippines, has gone into hiding after being accused of being a Chinese spy. The authorities were unable to execute an arrest warrant for Guo as she was not found at any of her known addresses.

The scandal surrounding Guo gained momentum when scam centers were uncovered in her town, disguised as online casinos catering to mainland Chinese customers. This discovery prompted suspicions of her involvement and potential ties to Beijing as an asset or spy.

The case has captivated the nation's attention, coinciding with the ongoing territorial disputes between Manila and Beijing in the South China Sea. Last Friday, the Senate ordered the arrest of Guo and some members of her family after she repeatedly ignored summons to appear in hearings related to the scam centers.

Senator Risa Hontiveros, who is leading the parliamentary investigation on Guo, issued a statement urging her to come forward, stating, "Show yourselves. Hiding will not erase the truth."

Guo, however, maintains her innocence and denies any wrongdoing. She claims to have been raised on her parents' pig farm and asserts her unwavering commitment to her constituents and the Philippines. Guo's lawyer, Nicole Jamilla, assured the public that her client would cooperate fully with official investigations.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, involved in the investigation, revealed immigration records suggesting that Guo is a Chinese national named Guo Hua Ping. Gatchalian accused Guo of evading arrest by hiding and announced that tracking teams would continue their efforts to locate her.

In a cryptic Facebook post, Guo addressed her constituents, hinting at her absence and expressing her love for Bamban. Despite the controversies surrounding her, Guo pushed back on regrets about her political career.

Aside from the Senate investigation, Guo is also under scrutiny in a separate anti-graft probe, which has resulted in her suspension. The scam centers in Bamban have highlighted the extent to which online casinos, known as Pogos (Philippine Online Gaming Operations), have been used as a cover for various criminal activities, including text scams and human trafficking. Some crime rings associated with Pogos have even gone as far as operating hospitals that provide cosmetic surgery to fugitives seeking to alter their appearance.

While questions surrounding Guo's citizenship may affect her eligibility to serve as mayor, her constituents have shown unwavering support for her social outreach programs, which have been widely documented on her social media pages. Erica Miclat, a resident of Bamban, expressed gratitude for Guo's efforts, stating that she had brought positive change to the town.

As the search for Guo continues, the accusations of espionage and involvement in illicit activities cast a shadow over her political career and the reputation of Bamban. The case serves as a reminder of the complexities and consequences of political ties and the underlying criminal activities that can flourish under the veil of online gambling operations.
