In a Facebook speech ahead of the European Parliament election, Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico addressed the public for the first time since being seriously wounded in an assassination attempt three weeks ago. Fico, who is recovering from multiple wounds sustained in the attack, expressed gratitude for the well-wishes he received and acknowledged the significant damage to his health.
During the prerecorded speech, Fico revealed that it would be a "small miracle" if he returned to work in several weeks, indicating the severity of his injuries. Recounting the incident, which took place on May 15 in the town of Handlova, Fico declared that he harbored no hatred towards his attacker and forgave him.
Having been released from the hospital in Banska Bystrica last week, Fico was taken to his home in Bratislava to continue his recuperation. The Prime Minister underwent two surgeries, lasting a total of seven hours, to treat the gunshot wounds he sustained while greeting supporters. Although seemingly in good shape during his Facebook address, Fico stated that he would be back at work by the end of June or the beginning of July.
Fico's speech also touched upon his differing views on Russia's war on Ukraine and other issues, which he believes might have made him a target. The incident has further highlighted the deep political polarization within Slovakia, as opposition parties have led protests against Fico's government over its shifting policies, including stopping military aid to Ukraine and ending a special prosecutor's office despite concerns about the rule of law. The revamping of the state television and radio broadcaster has also faced criticism.
With Slovakia being a country of 5.4 million people, the attack on its Prime Minister has not only raised concerns about public safety but has also drawn attention to the divisive political environment in the nation. As Fico continues to recuperate, the people of Slovakia await his return to office and hope for a resolution to the ongoing political tensions.
