Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico remains in serious condition but his prognosis is positive, officials announced on Saturday. Fico underwent a second extensive surgery lasting two hours on Friday at the Banská Bystrica hospital in an effort to save his life from multiple bullet wounds inflicted during a brutal political attack. Health Minister Zuzana Dolinkova confirmed the successful procedure, stating that the Prime Minister's condition was stable but still serious.

The shocking incident took place on Wednesday when Fico was shot four times at close range by a lone gunman, causing waves of paralysis throughout the country and worldwide. The Roosevelta Hospital issued a statement confirming Fico's stable condition, revealing that no unexpected complications had surfaced overnight. The Prime Minister was reported to be conscious and recovering, albeit still in extreme pain. The medical team stressed that there is an ongoing risk of further complications.

Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák, who engaged in discussions with Fico, ensured that the government would continue functioning while the Prime Minister convalesced, according to Reuters. Amid heightened security measures, the alleged perpetrator, identified as Juraj C., appeared in court for the first time on Saturday. The judge ruled that the individual should remain in custody until the trial, as reported by local media.

Kaliňák called for a period of "deep self-reflection" within society to mend societal divides that have been attributed to the violent act. However, Deputy Prime Minister Tomáš Taraba took a different stance on Facebook, blaming the opposition and news outlet Denník N for fostering "hatred" towards Fico.

The assassination attempt on Prime Minister Fico has sent shockwaves throughout Slovakia and internationally. The country anxiously awaits further updates on Fico's recovery, praying for his swift return to health and stability.
