### Deadly Shooting Near Tennessee State University Leaves One Dead, Nine Injured

Gunfire erupted near Tennessee State University's homecoming events in Nashville, Tennessee, resulting in one death and nine injuries, Metro Nashville police reported. A Metro Nashville Police spokesperson, Don Aaron, described the events unfolding around 5 p.m. as individuals from two different groups began exchanging gunfire across a street, following a day of homecoming activities.

The tragic incident broke out after a crowd that had gathered for the day’s earlier celebrations began to disperse. Metro Nashville Police Commander Anthony McClain noted that the violence appeared to be disconnected from the university's official homecoming events, which included a parade and were highlighted by a football game that was occurring elsewhere at the time.

Commander McClain expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating, "It's unfortunate that a few folks ruined it for everybody," and emphasized the pressing need to curb such violence.

According to police reports, a 24-year-old man was killed, and among the injured were two 12-year-olds and a 14-year-old, all with non-critical injuries. Police spokesperson Brooke Reese indicated that at least some of those injured were likely participants in the exchange of gunfire.

First responders, including police and firefighters, rushed to the scene, some applying makeshift tourniquets using belts, as noted by Kendra Loney from the fire department. Eyewitness Jashawna Rucker recounted the chaotic scene to WTVF-TV, expressing gratitude for escaping without harm. Meanwhile, Rauf Muhammad, a food vendor present at the site, described the abrupt transition from a festive atmosphere to one of fear and confusion, likening it to being in a war zone.

Rucker and Muhammad's harrowing accounts underscore the suddenness and severity of the violence that marred what should have been a day of celebration. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about public safety and the far-reaching impacts of such senseless acts of violence.
