In a shocking incident on Wednesday afternoon, a shooting during a Ramadan event in Philadelphia resulted in three individuals being wounded. The authorities have taken five suspects into custody, as reported by the Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel.

The unfortunate incident took place around 2:30 p.m. at Clara Muhammad Square, located on 47th Street and Wyalusing Avenue in West Philadelphia. According to NBC Philadelphia, there seemed to be two groups engaging in a gunfight within the park. As responding police officers arrived at the scene, they witnessed four individuals fleeing.

Commending the brave efforts of the police and event attendees, Commissioner Bethel expressed gratitude that the situation did not escalate further, remarking, "We are very, very fortunate today that we did not have more individuals shot and anyone killed." He mentioned that approximately 30 gunshots were fired in a park where nearly 1,000 people had gathered.

In a display of quick thinking and courage, some participants at the event prioritized the safety of children, swiftly guiding them away from harm's way. Bethel highlighted the collective efforts of those in attendance as well as the police officers.

During the event, one officer confronted a 15-year-old male who was armed and shot him in the shoulder and leg. Bethel further revealed that three individuals were shot during the mayhem. One person was injured before police arrived, another was injured by police gunfire, and a child was wounded in the hand by unidentified gunfire.

Following the incident, the authorities recovered five firearms that were allegedly involved in the shooting. In the midst of the chaotic aftermath, a child was unfortunately struck by a police vehicle, resulting in a broken leg.

The Philadelphia Masjid, a local mosque near the scene, was hosting an event at the time of the shooting. However, NBC News was unable to reach anyone from the mosque for comment at the time of the report.

Law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigation into the shooting, seeking further information and evidence to determine the motive behind this disturbing incident. As the community comes to terms with the events of the day, the focus remains on providing support to the injured and ensuring the safety and well-being of all those affected by this senseless act of violence.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
