Shiloh first filed to drop the name "Pitt" from her last name on her 18th birthday in May. However, her petition faced a delay in July when a court postponed her hearing due to an incomplete background check.

According to her lawyer, Peter Levine, the court was unable to complete the background check before the scheduled hearing, leading to the rescheduling of the hearing for August 19. Levine clarified that every individual seeking a name change must undergo a background check, and due to a clerical error, Shiloh's hearing had to be continued to a new date.

Despite the temporary setback, Shiloh persevered with the next step in California's name-change process. She followed the requirement to publish an announcement in the Los Angeles Times in July, declaring her intention to change her name to "Shiloh Jolie."

California law mandates that before a judge can approve a name change petition, it must be published in a newspaper for one month. This ensures that the request appears in the legal notice section of the paper, allowing for public awareness and potential objections.

Shiloh's decision to drop "Pitt" from her name garnered attention, with a source close to Brad Pitt informing PEOPLE that the actor was "aware" of the change. The source expressed Pitt's feelings of being upset by the reminders that he has lost his children, as he loves them dearly and misses them.
