WNBA Hall of Famer and broadcaster Sheryl Swoopes held a press conference on Tuesday to address the controversy surrounding her previous comments about basketball star Caitlin Clark and the strained relationship with former WNBA coach Nancy Lieberman. Swoopes, known for her candid analysis, has faced criticism for her harsh remarks about Clark's career during a podcast appearance earlier this year.

During the podcast, Swoopes made questionable statements suggesting that Clark had played five college seasons and took over 40 shots per game. However, Clark, who recently broke the NCAA's all-time basketball points record, actually played four seasons and averaged 22.7 shots per game. Swoopes now acknowledges that she made misstatements and attributes the confusion to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on the 2020-2021 college basketball season.

Swoopes expressed regret for her comments but made it clear that she would only apologize to Caitlin Clark directly. She revealed that she had reached out to Clark and had a positive conversation with her. In an event attended by Fox News Digital, Swoopes emphasized that she owed no apology to anyone else.

To support her claims, Swoopes shared screenshots of text messages exchanges with someone named Caitlin Clark from February, showing her offering an apology. She explained that her comments about Clark's college career length and the age disparity were hyperbole, influenced by the unique circumstances of the COVID-19 year, where older players were granted an extra year of eligibility.

The fallout with Nancy Lieberman, who replaced Swoopes as a TV analyst for a recent game, was also addressed. According to Swoopes, their disagreement stemmed from a social media interaction and a text exchange, rather than a phone call as Lieberman had claimed. Swoopes criticized Lieberman for publicly calling her out on Twitter, and expressed her belief that their relationship was effectively over.

Swoopes, the first player ever signed in the WNBA, had a legendary career with the Houston Comets, leading them to four championships and earning multiple MVP titles. Despite the current controversy, Swoopes remains focused on her broadcasting career and reconciliation with Caitlin Clark, leaving the fallout with Lieberman behind.

The press conference shed some light on Swoopes' intentions and intentions and offered some clarity in regards to her previous statements. It remains to be seen how this controversy will impact her career as a broadcaster and her relationship with those involved.
