Severe storms struck northeast Colorado on Monday night, unleashing a barrage of damaging hail that shattered windows and blanketed the ground like snow in the plains community of Yuma. Volunteer firefighter JJ Unger reported extensive hail damage throughout the area, exacerbating the already precarious situation as the town was under a flash flood warning and facing the threat of tornadoes.

The hailstorm caused significant flooding in Yuma, with the accumulation of hail blocking drainage flows. Volunteer firefighters, including Unger, were dispatched to handle the chaotic scene brought by the severe weather. "There's going to be a lot of cleaning up to do in this town," Unger lamented.

As a result of the storm, widespread power outages plagued northern Yuma County and the eastern edge of northern Washington County. Y-W Electric Association, Inc. confirmed the "widespread" nature of the outages. Both counties also experienced tornado warnings throughout the night, further adding to the ordeal.

Unger described the hail as unprecedented in size, at least the size of golf balls. The visibility on the roads became severely impaired, causing crews to pull over. Unger's own Ford F-150 pickup truck suffered hail damage, with the windshield taking a beating similar to the windows at the Yuma fire hall, which were completely blasted out.

The storm's aftermath was marked by vehicles sliding off the road and even a collision between a car and cows on U.S. 34 heading towards town. Unger emphasized the extent of the damage: "I would assume all the vehicles around town and houses have windows that are shattered too." The storm left residents uneasy, with reports flooding in of scared individuals as windows in their homes broke.

The city of Yuma now faces the arduous task of cleaning up the mess left by the storm. The Yuma School District announced the closure of all schools and district offices on Tuesday due to the severe weather. Additionally, all activities are canceled to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Looking ahead, the Pinpoint Weather team forecasts more storms to occur on Tuesday night but expects them to be less severe than the previous night's onslaught. Yuma and surrounding areas will need to remain vigilant and prepare for potential further impact from the weather.
