In an unexpected turn of events, an 81-year-old man has been apprehended by police for allegedly terrorizing a neighborhood in southern California with a slingshot. The Azusa police department revealed that the man had caused havoc for nearly a decade, victimizing numerous citizens in the area.
Law enforcement officials began their investigation after receiving multiple reports of broken windows, car windshields, and near misses with ball bearings shot from a slingshot. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Subsequently, detectives uncovered a disturbing pattern, learning that dozens of citizens had fallen victim to the actions of this serial slingshot shooter over the course of 9-10 years.
On Thursday, the suspect's reign of terror came to an end as officers executed a search warrant at his home in Azusa, approximately 25 miles (40km) east of Los Angeles. During the search, authorities uncovered a slingshot and ball bearings, key pieces of evidence tying him to the crimes.
According to Azusa police Lt Jake Bushey, most of the ball bearings were shot from the suspect's backyard. However, investigators have yet to uncover a clear motive behind the suspect's actions, with Bushey explaining that the incidents appeared to be driven solely by "malicious mischief."
The 81-year-old man is expected to make his first court appearance on Tuesday, where charges related to the extensive damage caused by his alleged slingshot attacks will be addressed.
This disturbing case serves as a reminder that even in seemingly peaceful neighborhoods, mischief and harm can lurk in unexpected places. The arrest of the serial slingshot shooter has not only brought relief to the community but also shed light on the importance of vigilance in reporting suspicious activity promptly.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have been a victim of the suspect's actions to come forward and provide information to aid in the ongoing investigation.
As the legal proceedings continue, the community can now breathe a collective sigh of relief, knowing that the reign of the slingshot-wielding menace has finally come to an end.
