Tennis legend Serena Williams delivered a sharp comment targeting Kansas City Chiefs player Harrison Butker during the ESPY Awards held on Thursday. The 23-time grand slam champion made a reference to controversial comments made by the kicker earlier this year, highlighting her support for women's sports.
Hosting the event alongside her sister Venus Williams and actress Quinta Brunson, Serena took a moment during a segment about women's sports to address Butker. Venus concluded the segment by emphasizing the importance of women's sports, stating, "So go ahead and enjoy women's sports like you would any other sports because they are sports." Serena then added, "Except you, Harrison Butker. We don't need you," which elicited applause and laughter from the audience.
Serena Williams has been a vocal advocate for women's sports and expressed her belief that women's sport is now receiving the recognition it has always deserved. In an interview earlier this year, she also revealed her interest in potentially owning a WNBA team.
Butker's comments at the ESPYs were in response to a speech he gave in May at Benedictine College, where he criticized Pride Month and suggested that women find fulfillment primarily through marriage and children rather than pursuing careers. His remarks received significant backlash from fans, as well as from organizations like GLAAD, who deemed his speech "out of step with Americans about Pride, LGBTQ people, and women."
The NFL distanced itself from Butker's words, while his teammate Travis Kelce and Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes expressed their disagreement with his statements but stated their commitment to supporting him as a teammate. However, Butker stood by his comments, proclaiming that his views align with timeless Catholic values.
The ESPY Awards provided Serena Williams with a platform to address Butker's comments and assert her support for women's sports, reiterating that they deserve equal recognition and respect alongside any other sport.
