In a recent interview, Senator Bernie Sanders commended Vice President Kamala Harris' pragmatic approach to her evolving positions on fracking and Medicare for All, stating that Harris is making strategic choices aimed at securing victory in the upcoming election. While Sanders acknowledged that Harris may not align completely with his own views, he emphasized that she still represents a progressive voice within the Democratic Party.
Sanders emphasized that there are other progressive policies on which Harris can campaign, such as raising the minimum wage, increasing taxes on the wealthy, and bolstering Social Security benefits. According to Sanders, if Harris focuses her campaign on these issues, particularly advocating for tax hikes on billionaires, she stands a good chance of not just winning, but winning decisively.
Harris has faced criticism for changing her stance on certain issues, most notably her previous support for a fracking ban and Medicare for All. In a recent ABC News interview, Harris defended her shifting positions, asserting that her values and policy perspectives remain consistent, even as she modifies her approach. Sanders did not officially endorse Harris when she replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, but he expressed his intention to offer strong support, contingent upon Harris addressing the concerns of the American working class.
In recent weeks, Harris has been focused on outlining her economic agenda, leading to some softening of Biden's proposed fiscal 2025 budget. For example, while Biden suggests a 39.6% tax rate on long-term capital gains for households making $1 million or more, Harris has proposed a similar tax but at a 28% rate. When asked about Harris' proposed rate, Sanders indicated that he would advocate for an even higher percentage, highlighting that there is much more work to be done in terms of progressing towards a fairer tax system.
Additionally, Harris has endorsed a 25% minimum tax on total income, including "unrealized gains," commonly referred to as the "billionaire minimum tax." At a campaign event in New Hampshire, Harris emphasized the need for billionaires and corporations to pay their fair share of taxes, ensuring that those with the means contribute proportionately, rather than burdening teachers, nurses, and firefighters who often pay higher tax rates.
Despite their differences, Sanders affirmed that he still considers Harris to be a progressive. While their views may not align entirely, Sanders acknowledged that Harris' campaign pledges to make the child tax credit permanent, expand affordable housing options, and strengthen unions are substantial steps in the right direction.
As the election approaches, it remains to be seen how Harris' pragmatic approach and progressive stances will resonate with voters. It is clear, however, that Sanders recognizes her commitment to important progressive issues and believes that they will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the country.
