In an opinion piece published in The New York Times, Senator Bernie Sanders expressed his unwavering support for President Joe Biden's decision to remain the presumptive Democratic nominee for president. Sanders defended Biden against critics, labeling him as the most effective president in modern history and the strongest candidate to defeat Donald Trump.
The Vermont independent, who was a contender in the 2020 Democratic primary, called on members of his party to halt the "bickering and nit-picking" over Biden's candidacy. Sanders emphasized that he would do everything in his power to ensure Biden's re-election.
Despite Biden's recent underwhelming debate performance against former President Donald Trump, the 82-year-old Senator criticized what he referred to as the "obsessive focus" of the corporate media on the June presidential debate and Biden's cognitive capabilities. Sanders pointed out that the president's role is one of the most demanding and stressful jobs in the world.
Furthermore, Sanders censured Democrats who have questioned Biden's mental fitness and ability to defeat Trump again, accusing them of joining a "circular firing squad." Currently, 18 Democratic lawmakers have called for Biden to step aside as the party's presidential nominee. However, Sanders maintained that while Biden may not be the ideal candidate, he should unquestionably be the one to lead the party.
Sanders stressed the need for Democrats to unite and cease engaging in infighting. He reiterated that the election is not a popularity contest based on age but a battle of policies. Sanders highlighted the importance of focusing on whose policies have and will benefit the majority of the American people.
Since the debate, Sanders has consistently defended Biden, affirming that the election is centered around policies rather than personal attributes. He emphasized the urgency of prioritizing policy discussions over trivial matters in interviews, stating that the Grammy Awards are not relevant to the presidential race.
As the 2022 midterm elections approach, Sanders' words carry weight within the Democratic Party. His continued support for President Biden serves as a rallying cry for party members to come together, set aside differences, and concentrate on their policy goals moving forward.
