In a heartbreaking incident at Willard Bay Reservoir, a 38-year-old man from Layton, Andre Leon Debose, tragically drowned on Saturday while trying to save his son from stormy waters. This marks the second drowning death at Willard Bay within the week, according to Utah State Parks.
The incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. on August 11, as Debose, his 17-year-old son, and others were enjoying a day of swimming and boating near Eagle Beach in the northwest section of the reservoir. As stormy weather approached the area, a 19-year-old woman in the group began struggling in the water. Debose's son bravely jumped in to help her, successfully bringing her back on board the boat.
However, tragedy struck when Debose's son struggled to reboard the boat himself and found himself in distress amidst the rough waters. Witnesses reported that, without hesitation, Debose jumped into the water to save his son. Both father and son held onto a single life jacket while battling the elements.
Heartbreakingly, Debose went under the water and did not resurface, leaving his son alone in the water. Park rangers were immediately alerted and initiated a search and rescue operation. Tragically, Debose's lifeless body was recovered from the water at approximately 11:15 p.m. that night. Thankfully, his son was cleared by medical responders at the scene.
Utah State Parks extended their deepest condolences to Debose's family and friends during this devastating time. They also expressed their gratitude to the agencies that assisted in the search and recovery efforts, including the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation ROV Team, Box Elder County Search and Rescue, and Weber County Search and Rescue.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety during recreational activities. Officials urge all outdoor enthusiasts to always recreate with a buddy, wear a life jacket, and remain aware of weather conditions. It is also crucial to let someone know your location and expected return time to ensure prompt assistance in case of emergencies.
As the community mourns the loss of Andre Leon Debose, it is a somber moment to reflect on the selfless act of heroism he displayed in a desperate attempt to save his son's life. The tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of the water and highlights the importance of practicing caution and vigilance in all outdoor pursuits.
