In a recent tirade on his show, Fox News host Sean Hannity accused Arizona Democrats of using a revived 1864 law criminalizing abortion to gain political advantage in the upcoming fall elections. Hannity urged Democrats to take action to repeal the law and claimed that they were deliberately using it as a political tool.

The contentious law, which bans abortion throughout pregnancy unless a woman's life is at risk, was revived by the state's Republican-stacked Supreme Court. Notably, the ban has faced opposition from some Republicans, including former President Donald Trump.

Hannity's criticism of Arizona Democrats follows his initial call for the state's GOP to address the issue. Left-leaning journalism watchdog group Media Matters highlighted Hannity's switch in targets, pointing out his earlier call for Republican leaders to "get their act together" and change the law.

However, unsaid in Hannity's critique is the fact that some GOP lawmakers in Arizona support the near-total ban, making it unlikely that the party would have the necessary votes to pass a bill to the Democratic governor's desk.

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, responded to the court's decision by criticizing Republicans who celebrated a previous ruling that paved the way for the current decision. She emphasized that the state's Republican-led legislature is evenly divided, and for Democrats to have any chance of changing the law, they would need substantial support from Republican lawmakers.

According to AP VoteCast, a majority of Arizona voters in the 2022 midterm elections expressed support for guaranteeing legal abortion nationwide. The state recorded 11,530 abortions in 2022, according to Arizona's Department of Health Services.

Meanwhile, abortion rights advocates have launched the Arizona for Abortion Access campaign and claim to have gathered over 500,000 signatures in support of a ballot question. The petition seeks to ask voters to approve a constitutional amendment protecting the right to abortion until viability.

Former President Donald Trump, while attending a campaign fundraiser in Atlanta, criticized the Arizona court's decision as going too far. He called on state lawmakers to amend the law, despite defending the U.S. Supreme Court's 2022 ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade.

As the fall elections draw near, the fate of the controversial abortion law in Arizona remains uncertain. Democrats and Republicans are at odds, and the outcome will likely hinge on whether enough Republican lawmakers are willing to support changes to the law. With the current division in the state's legislature, it remains to be seen if any significant action will be taken before the elections.

Biden narrowly won Arizona in 2020, and the future of abortion legislation in the state could significantly impact the political landscape moving forward.
